Happy Anniversary, Romania! Today, 1st of December, Romanians celebrate the Great Union of our country. As we earlier mentioned on our throwback Instagram post, we created a new outfit pertaining to Romanian culture; however, we modernized it as much as we could. For this day, we especially chose the rustic thousand year old settlement, Golesti Museum, found near our hometown. And now that I familiarized the concept of this post, I’ll describe the outfit while comparing it to the signature traditional costume of Romanians.

First of all, the reason why we were able to build this outfit is due to our grandma who gifted us with this beautiful “ie” (a blouse traditionally worn by girls and women). The vintage blouse is decorated handmade embroidered Romanian motifs of which quality most types of “ie” can’t be found today. One significant change made to the traditional costume is the pants. Usually, women and girls opt for red or burgundy skirts with more embroideries, rather than green flowy pants. As for accessories, the red oversized belt represents our contemporary version of a traditional belt, which is usually thinner, tied to the side and matching the color of the skirt. To continue these contemporary adjustments of the outfit, I decided on wearing a pair of colorful gladiator sandals; whereas the original peasant shoes are black or brown and similarly tied around the ankle.

Even though we don’t often address the hair we chose for an outfit, this time it matches the theme. A lot of women who wear Romanian costumes often wear their hair in an elegant bun and add roses to complete the hairstyle. As I am obsessed with space buns, I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to integrate them into a look with the purpose of bringing it into a contemporary zone.

Hopefully this post celebrating the Great Union of Romania interested you and showed you a new, intriguing aspect of this culture. There aren’t a lot more traditional ways to show your patriotism than strolling among a museum of Romanian cottages and picking up apples and flowers. Typical. Romanian. Culture. And with this post over, you can resume your work and enjoy the rest of this day as a Romanian!
